LG unveil the GD880i Mini with Mobile World Congress

February 17th, 2010 by joeO

The emergence of touchscreen technology as a staple in phone design has had both positive and negative consequences. The positive is obvious; touchscreen adds a new depth of interactivity for the consumer as well as a whole host of other features that just wouldn’t work without touchscreen. The negative is also obvious, glaringly so. It’s that brick on your desk, the big bulge in the back pocket of your jeans. Yes, it is the increase in size I’m talking about. This is why LG have unveiled the visually stunning GD880i at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The fittingly named ‘Mini’...

The latest from Mobile World Congress 2010

February 16th, 2010 by joeO

This years Mobile World Congress kicked off on Monday in sunny Barcelona. Sadly I’m not there soaking up the sun and drinking Sangria, but I have been keeping my ear to the ground for any updates from this year’s event which is sponsored by LG. Today LG announced that they are teaming up with the mobile security and control company Good Technology. LG will be including the Good For You offering on a broad range of phones including the GW620 InTouch Max, GD510 Pop phone and the GM750. Good For You delivers an integrated user experience for mobile email, social networking and...

The LG Cookie Plus, a (chocolate) chip off the old block

February 11th, 2010 by joeO

The LG Cookie phone sold 10 million units worldwide, so it’s no surprise to hear LG announce plans to release The LG Cookie Plus later this year. “The LG Cookie Plus is both a celebration of the original Cookie phone, which brought touchscreen technology to all, and an exciting first step in our new line of phones that will continue the Cookie legacy by adding creativity and affordability to the touch experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. The biggest difference between the Cookie plus and its forerunner is the inclusion of social networking features....

LG GW620 Android phone – A messaging marvel!

February 11th, 2010 by joeO

Another day, another legitimate reason to play with my phone in the office. The GW620 is packed with excellent features, so I decided it was time to try some of them out, rather than just browse the Android market for apps all day long! One feature I was keen on testing out was the threaded messaging, so in the name of research I started texting like a teenager possessed. If you’re anything like me then frequently you will find yourself struggling to remember what you wrote in your last message. Thankfully the GW620 links all texts onto one thread so they...

“Welcome to Rapture”

February 3rd, 2010 by joeO

“I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the...

LG GW620 Android phone

February 3rd, 2010 by joeO

Last week I wrote a brief introduction to the GW620 and promised to tell you more having spent the weekend testing it out. Never one to break a promise, here is my feedback having spent some time playing with just a fraction of the many apps available from the android market place. If I were to pick a favourite app it would definitely be the ‘Family Guy Soundboard’. If my flatmate were to pick a least favourite app, it would undoubtedly be the ‘Family Guy Soundboard’. As a big Family Guy fan, getting catchphrases and soundbites from the show in the...

First impressions of the LG GW620 Android phone

January 29th, 2010 by joeO

Today I finally got my hands on an LG GW620 and was so busy playing with it I almost forgot to tell you about it! My first impressions are positive. It looks good without being overly flashy subjecting you to unwanted attention from undesirables. It’s well designed ergonomically, fitting nicely in your hand, as well as having a bit of weight to it reminding you it is a serious piece of technology. The phone was simple to use, with logical navigational menus allowing first time users not to feel overwhelmed by the wealth of features. Admittedly it took me a little...

LG InTouch Max GW620 reviewed

January 29th, 2010 by joeO

Techradar.com have posted their review of LG’s first android phone, the InTouch Max GW620, awarding it 4 out of 5 stars! The review states “LG has clearly thought about what users want from a phone like this”, listing the easy to use slide out QWERTY keyboard, high quality 5.0 mega-pixel camera, effective social networking overlay and it’s reasonable price as highlights. Their main complaint with the phone is the use of the S-class UI (user interface) system, which the reviewer personally struggled with, but also conceded that it can be turned off according to preference. The review concludes by describing the GW620 as...

It’s me, Mario!

January 22nd, 2010 by joeO

The single greatest Christmas present I ever received was my NES games console. It is safe to say I probably wouldn’t be writing a technology blog today if Santa hadn’t made me so happy I threw up on the dog when he left me a Nintendo Entertainment System under my Christmas tree. I loved that console… I miss it; I’m getting nostalgic thinking about the hours I spent playing my favourite games. Digger T-Rock, Duck Hunt, Mega Man, Double Dragon and Tetris to name but a few. But undoubtedly the biggest impact of the NES was the emergence of the...
